Hi I’m Kathy. Welcome to Food Wine Thyme a.k.a Olives & Garlic.
On June 26, 2012 I started Food Wine Thyme to channel my creativity and share my passions for food, entertaining, good wine, healthy lifestyle and life in general. The name was born from a collaborative effort between me and my husband Kurt, who is the backbone of everything I am. He is a true friend and a great partner. I am thankful for him every day.
I plan on sharing many of my recipes from the kitchen and some of Kurt’s recipes from the backyard. And truly hope that you enjoy reading about our experiences.
My philosophy on eating is quite simple. I believe in eating foods that are whole, seasonal and fresh. I try my best to stay away from artificial sweeteners, added preservatives and fillers. Kurt and I have adopted the Mediterranean diet and we love what it does to our bodies. Our plates are filled with 50% colorful vegetables, 25% lean proteins (mostly fish and seafood) and 25% whole grains. We limit artificial sugar and instead use fruit and honey to sweeten our dishes. My drink of choice is water or green tea. I don’t drink soda or soft drinks. All my juices come from fresh fruit straight out of my juicer.
We instill this philosophy onto our 5 year old as well. Briana knows how bad sugar is for her. She understands the importance of eating fewer cookies or candy. She actually asks for fruits, berries and loves to participate whenever we juice. Her chicken soup doesn’t come from a can loaded with MSG. Instead it’s made by me with real chicken and real vegetables.
Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicating or expensive. However, it does require some commitment and prep work. I believe in reading nutrition labels and inspecting the ingredient list. For me, food is a source of joy and pleasure. My fridge is always full of colorful vegetables and vibrant fruits. My juicer does not leave the countertop and my blender is always ready for my morning smoothie. I do not buy junk food. If it’s not in my house, then we are not going to eat it. Of course I like to indulge once in a while. When I do I make smart choices. After all I am a girl who loves chocolate.
I have noticed a major change in my energy levels, my mood, the appearance of my skin and my overall well being. As a teenager and even into my twenties I suffered from acne. My skin would break out all the time. Changing my eating habits made a major difference. Now as a thirty year old I can honestly say I am feeling better than I have before.
But before I go on, let’s rewind and I’ll tell you a bit about my life.
I come from a family where food is a large player in everything we do. Ever since I was a little girl my mom made lots of food. My parents loved having parties and there was more food than anyone could ever eat or could fit on the table. At a very young age I was taught how to prepare dishes with love. I’ve grown up watching Mom create her masterpieces and little has changed, my parents still love their parties. Although my passion for cooking did not develop until I met Kurt, I always had the foundation that was layed by my Mom. And I will forever be grateful for that.
I attended Pace University and received my Bachelors in Business Administration in Finance in 2004 and went on to explore the world of Banking. Although Kurt professes to be a career bartender he finds himself a General Sales Manager of a wildly successful Volkswagen Dealership.
We live in the New York Metropolitan Area, in a little big town in New Jersey with our vivacious and energetic 5 year old (going on 15). Our careers pull us into a daily grind that makes finding time for other things difficult. At the end of a long day the couch and a glass of wine is exactly what we need.
I am from New York. Kurt is from California. Fate brought us together and we have been making each other happy ever since.
In 2011 we got married and have been creating our happily ever after.
Our relationship brought out a passion for food and cooking that I never thought existed. As I started cooking our figures changed a bit. I cooked everything and anything but eventually realized that we enjoy being healthy a lot more. So we compromised, found peace with our weight and created a lifestyle that combined our inner foodies and our desires to be healthy. And Vola! here we are.
Food is a huge source of pleasure for me, I am happy to be able to incorporate it into our lives and enjoy all the pleasures it brings. Food Wine Thyme is a chronicle documenting our lives and experiences, thoughts and discoveries, but best of all its a place where I can express myself through food, photography and all things in general.
