Kurt and I have been trying to cut down on our consumption of meat for some time now and we have been quite successful at it. Most of the weeknights we eat seafood or vegetarian meals, however one day a week usually on Sundays we don’t follow any specific rules and eat what our hearts desire. I find that we are able to stick to clean eating a lot better this way and watch what goes on our plates. Eating this way controlls cravings for junk and makes us actually want to be good.
Last night, however, I craved a juicy turkey burger and some baked fries. Why not, after all maybe it was my body’s way of telling me I need certain vitamins. 😉 But I wanted to want to cook something worth photographing. Earlier that day I was very surprised to find a package that I hadn’t expected at our door when I came home. As I opened it my heart jumped with joy. Hubby surprised me and ordered a new lens for my camera. A lens that will save my sanity while I try to photograph my food. I am so excited about it, I feel like it’s my birthday. So of course I had to try it that night.
The Southwest Turkey Burger as we named it, was simply delicious, moist, spicy and flavorful. It was exactly what I needed. And my oven baked thick cut garlic herb fries made a perfect compliment to the dish. Try it and you’ll be hooked.
SOUTHWEST TURKEY BURGER
Makes 4 burgers
1 lbs of lean ground turkey
2 tbs of your favorite rub (I used Emeril Lagasse Bam Burger Rub. Absolutely love this stuff. I came across it at the grocery store when it was on sale and decided to give it a try. We have been in love with it since)
4 slices of pepper jack cheese
tomato, sliced thinly
pickled jalapenos, sliced
Cholula Chili Lime Mayo sauce (simply combine 1 tbsp of Cholula Lime Hot Sauce with 2 tbsp mayo)
- Mix all ingridients together. Use 1/4lb for each burger and form into patties. Grill until cooked thoroughly (I grilled these right on my stove top grill pan).
- Turn the heat off, place cheese on top of the burger and cover the grill pan with a lid. Let the cheese melt
- To assemble burgers, place burger on the bun. Top with tomato, pickles, jalapenos, sauce and arugula.

OVEN BAKED THICK CUT GARLIC HERB FRIES
3 russet baking potatoes, cut into think fries
4 garlic cloves
1 tsp crushed dried rosemary
1 tsp dried thyme
3 tbsp olive oil
salt to taste
Cover a baking sheet with foil. Place fries and bake at 350 degrees for 45 min.
